- Where in this text do you see the connections between what Freud says about human motivation and our dreams and the way Gabriel Garcia Marquez has chosen to write this text? Give specific examples including passages from the text. Cite page numbers.
- Find a piece of art which you feel represents a passage or portion of the text. (You will need to paste the link to the artwork in your blog post so that other students may view it.) Explain your choice. Support your explanation by comparing the passage from the text with details from the artwork. Cite page numbers. Do not simply Google One Hundred Years of Solitude art, do a little more of an in-depth searching on your own.
- Identify elements of the story that you find particularly confusing, interesting, or worthy of discussion. Pose your own questions. Include portions of the text that you feel contribute to your questions/your point. Cite page numbers.
Interesting to see how insomnia causes memory loss. I think here there is some allusion to Freud when he talks about humans revisiting their deepest memories in dreams and sleep.

ReplyDeleteI chose this picture because it depicts a lonely child that reminds me of Rebeca when she comes to the Buendia house. It reminds me of how the author described Rebeca by saying, "It was impossible to obtain any further information from the girl. From the moment she got there she had been sitting...They even began to think she was a deaf-mute.." on page 41. The painting reminds me of that because the girl in the photo is just sitting there kept to herself and doesn't look overly social (like Rebeca in the beginning). The background of this photo also reminds me of the plaster Rebeca eats for some reason (even though what she eats is white) and her simple lifestyle.
I also think it displays the mood of the ghost of Prudencio, because the child's solemn look and loneliness on her face expresses the words JAB said to Ursula on page 23, "He must be suffering a great deal. You can see that he's very lonely."
Interesting how colonel aureliano has 17 children and all of them were boys. And how Pietro Crespi kills himself after getting rejected by Amaranta.
ReplyDeleteWhy did the author have Remedios die? What was the purpose? It seemed to me like she could have evolved into a main part of the story. I wonder if her death "hardened" Aureliano in a way so that he had an excuse to go to war?
ReplyDeleteI feel like the way that the book is written is almost like a dream. At many points the book is hard to follow the the element of time is very hard to follow, you never know exaclty what the series of event really are. Kind of like in a dream, everything is mixed up and blened together. This may be due to the fact that it is kind of a hard story to understand but i really think this is an element that the author ment to add in. Am i just crazy or what??
ReplyDeleteThis story is pretty weird, but it's well written. I would say that this guy has a lot of strange things going through his mind if he is talking about incest and people dying. Freud mentions that forgetting a friends name is like saying they should die and gabriel wrote about one of the characters forgot another character's name. The other thing is that civilization was built on an inevitable conflict between humans true desires and their requirements of work and achievement. For the story, The two manin characters Ursula and Jose Arcadio Buendia build their family up and they grow up and do their own thing and Jose goes crazy, and there is a lot of incest involved, and shunning of family members.
ReplyDeleteI am kinda confused about the switching between Aureliano and Arcadio. Like I am pretty sure Aureliano is the mean war one but what does Arcadio do? And why is that family messed up? And since when are Rebeca and whichever "brother" exiled? because technically they aren't related. And why is Jose Arcadio Buendia still tied to a tree? I also don't really understand this war. There are a whole bunch of people in coming in and he recruited a bunch of kids and is really mean. But why do people put up with it? And how come we already got the the firing squad thing? I thought that would be in the end.
ReplyDeleteI read the assignment, but i wasn't exactly sure how Rebeca and Jose Arcadio were banished or exiled. I may have read over that part too quickly or it just wasn't mentioned, but I found that in itself to be confusing.
ReplyDeleteThis is in response to James said. I think that what you said is so true. Ive never thought about it that way but its really insightful! After you saying that i wish the author would have taken the insomnia bit of the book and kept going along with it. just because its such a good connection with Freud

ReplyDeleteI chose this picture because I feel like this would be how Jose Arcadio Buendia would look after being chained to the tree for being crazy. The picture doesn't have the person/animal chained to a tree, but the colors and shapes are kind of surreal looking and I think this is what Jose Arcadio Buendia was feeling. The creature in the painting is also outside of the gate which relates to Jose Arcadio Buendia because he too was outside the "gates" or house of his family.
Amantra feels personal responsiblity for the death of Remedios and especially the death of Pietro Crespi. Do you think that Amantra should feel guilty for these deaths in her family? If you were Amantra, would you believe that your actions caused Pietro Crespi's death, or that it was his own decision do end his life? I wonder if these two dead people will start to haunt her like the man that JAB killed in the beginning of the book.
ReplyDeleteI think the Buendia family is very interesting. Jose Arcadio and Ursela were so welcoming to their two adoptive children, that one of them doesn't even know. But, two of their children marry each other. I also think all of the biblical references on page 82 and 83 of Father Nicanor talking with Jose Arcadio Buendia in Latin are interesting and unexpected. I think it's very strange that Jose Arcadio Buendia doesn't fight others that he isn't crazy. When Father Nicanor asks him why the tied him to a tree he simply replied because I am crazy. If he is truly not crazy why doesn't he do something about it and become freed from the tree.?
ReplyDeleteThe biggest thing I dont get in this book is how is the buendias family respected? To me this familuy seems pretty messed up. They have brother and sister married together and a daughter has killed two people.
ReplyDeleteAbby, I think that Aureliano is the one actually off in the army fighting the war outside of town while Arcadio is like the military leader put in charge of the town who doesn't leave. I agree, though, a lot of this is confusing
ReplyDeleteIn response to Megan's questions: I definitely think that Amantra should feel responsible for the deaths in her family. Had she now been trying to hard to stall her sisters wedding, then none of the deaths would have occurred in the first place. I also think that she is very responsible for Pietro Crespi's death. She continually led him on even though she knew she was only going to turn him down in the end. This was definitely a selfish act and I think she could handled the situation better.
ReplyDeleteTeddy, I think the reason the family is respected so much because they were the founders of the town and basically started Macondo. It seems like any family that is widely known, they have their problems. But when it comes down to it, the Buendias started Macondo so the whole town wouldn't exsist if it wasn't for the family.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Megan, I thing that Amanthra is definately responsible for the deaths. And because of this she should feel guilty, but I don't think that should go as far as inflicting phyical pain on yourself that will affect her for the rest of her life. I don't think it was just Amanthra that caused Pierto's death I think it was him being rejected numerous times by the women he loves. I think that is a really good point about the men haunting her.
ReplyDeleteMegan, I do think that there will be some sort of foreshadowing of Amantra's "murders". She I feel that she can get really jealous and do some mean stuff, or she has some pretty bad luck in her love life. Although I can't lie I like the fact the Amantra is making the book less confusing by killing people off.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Hannah's question: I think that Jose Arcadio Buendia initially went a little crazy, but I do believe it was only temporary until they tied him up. I think it may have been a situation were he was told he was crazy so many times that he started to believe it himself. I think if they wouldn't have left him to himself at the tree for so long he would have gone back to sanity.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Mary Kate's First post of the picture. I think the picture represents JAB very well. I think the darkness kind of alludes to the fact that he's alone. It does have him secluded and have trees so i think it's a good representation for his part in the book.
ReplyDeleteFirst off i believe that the names are hands down the hardest thing to grasp and that confuses me the most.I feel like this is a very interesting thing though because since the author is a Spanish american and the using of the parents names are common in their society.
ReplyDeleteSecond off i agree with Jamie 100% because i believe this author should have extended the insomnia part for the fact that is very interesting and would have made for a good part in the book.
ReplyDeletein response to megan's post i believe that she should feel guilty for both of the deaths that happened in her family. She poisoned Remedios accidently and broke Pietro's heart. I beleive that if i were Amaranta i would feel like my actions lead to his death, although he didn't have to take it so hard. He could've moved on or just.... idk. It could go both ways i guess. Her actions obviously promted it. But i do believe she is living her life like she doesnt deserve anything good or anyone. She continues to hurt herself and everyone she meets. So they do haunt her in a way.
ReplyDeleteI know i said this in class but i think that the numbers in the book have some type of symbolism, just like how numbers have a meaning to them in the bible. For instance,[i dont member exaclty how it goes] but someone is getting ready to sit down to crack eggs into a bowl. But it dosnt say "so and so" sat down to crack eggs into a bowl its says somthing like 'so and so' sat down to crack 32 eggs into a bowl. Why the heck is the author telling us the exact amount of eggs? Unless its suposed to mean something or give refrence to something. I just feel like there are parts of the book that are way to exact[for lack of a better word] for it to not mean anything. what do you guys think??
ReplyDeleteThis is Elyse... I am still very confused on this whole thing, and dont get why everyone has to be named Jose or have there name start with the letter A.... I know we have talked a lot about this in class, but I think that this book has a lot of similarities not just to the bible but also to some us history, in a way. I can see some symbolic meaning in the writing to, when I am reading the story sometimes.
ReplyDeleteOk so i just have to comment about the fact that amantra basicly killed every guy that has ever loved her! Is she crazy! I feel like she did all of this beucase at the time she was super immature. It dosnt say how old she really was but she must have been somewhat young Becuase any grown women...ok most grown women would have delt with their problems in a more mature efficent way. Like oh idk maybe actually talking to them!
ReplyDeleteMegan - I think that Amantra had a part in the deaths of the men, but ultimately it wasnt her who actually physically killed them, so its also on them. I think that she will be haunted later, because it seems like many people get haunted in this book. But I also think its unnecessary for Amantra to greave (i guess is what shes doing) the way she is. I mean she can get over it and get on with her life, even if she did have a part in the mens actions.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody have any clever ideas on hoe to remember all of these names? I know there's JAB, but I'm still soooo confused.
ReplyDeletealright i dont get who this prince guy is at church that give Remedios the flower. Is that Colonel Aureliano or someone else?
ReplyDeleteI really am starting to get confused in all the characters. They all do very bizarre things that most people wouldn't think to do. I wonder if the insomnia plague was referring to the black plague?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Elyse, I don't know why all the characters have three names. It really makes things a lot more confusing because all the names are similar but every character is completely unique.
